When it comes to planning and pulling off a mountain adventure, destination, company, weather, and route are just a few components that determine the success of the mission. Gear, however, is easily one of the most important components—if not the. As passionate on- and off-piste adventurists, we at Strafe Outerwear know how gear can make or break your experience. That’s why we ideate, create, test, and provide the highest quality outerwear for what we—and you—do out in the mountains.

Our team here at Strafe spends a lot of time hiking the Highland Bowl and touring the backcountry so we consider ourselves perfect product testers. When we think about what we make, we think about what we need first. With the challenging steeps of Aspen Highlands, the hike-to Highland Bowl and the surrounding Elk Mountains serving as our primary inspiration, homebase, and testing grounds, we require  breathable, durable, weatherproof materials. We need products that are comfortable when hiking and keep the wind and other elements at bay while skiing. This is why we turned to eVent Fabrics.

“Other fabrics just weren’t cutting it,” said John Gaston, one of our co-founders. “As we pushed ourselves harder and harder each season, traditional membranes just couldn’t keep up and moisture build-up inside the jacket ends up being the limiting comfort factor, especially if you are climbing to earn your turns all day long.”

“Our partnership with Strafe is well-aligned because both brands are centrally focused on performance,” says eVent Marketing Manager Paul Arnhold. “We appreciate the team consistently pushing the envelope when it comes to high-performing, high-quality mountain apparel.”

About eVent®

eVent was founded in 1999 to create air-permeable and waterproof performance textiles. Arnhold explains the conception of the brand: “As users ourselves who had grown frustrated with wet and clammy waterproof gear, our team saw an opportunity to provide a better waterproof experience. With expertise in ePTFE [expanded polytetrafluoroethylene], a synthetic compound that when used in material creates a resistance to liquid penetration yet allows smaller compounds like air to flow through, we felt it’s combination of hydrophobicity and air permeability was the ultimate combination for a waterproof membrane. While other suppliers were using a polyurethane coating to achieve oleophobicity [oil repellent], we developed a patented oleophobic microscopic coating method that allows us to maintain ePTFE’s open pore structure.”

Other fabrics just weren’t cutting it. As we pushed ourselves harder and harder each season, traditional membranes just couldn’t keep up. Moisture build-up inside the jacket ends up being the limiting comfort factor, especially if you are climbing to earn your turns all day long.

Unlike many  competitors, eVent doesn’t coat their material with a polyurethane (PU) film, which allows for a simpler, one-step process of eliminating moisture caused by body heat. We tested many fabrics and found eVent and it’s proprietary technology to be superior in venting and breathability.

“The critical difference between our technology and traditional waterproof/breathable fabrics is the billions of microscopic pores in our proprietary membrane that work instantly to vent water vapor (sweat) that builds up inside your outerwear when you’re active,” continues Arnhold. “The three-dimensional microporous web, with pores too small to let water pass through from the outside, allows immediate ventilation of water vapor while providing 100% waterproof and windproof protection.”

A fabric for many climates

Location, location, location. We know not all our clients adventure in Colorado’s dry Elk Mountains, many of them live in the powder-blessed Wasatch range of Utah, in the cold humidity of the Northeast or the consistently wet Pacific Northwest. We know not every product can fully address every climate perfectly, but we’re coming pretty close that’s to eVent’s Direct Venting technology.

Our partnership with Strafe is well-aligned because both brands are centrally focused on performance. We appreciate the team consistently pushing the envelope when it comes to high-performing, high-quality mountain apparel.

“It’s a ‘dry system’ that allows eVent fabrics to be fully waterproof and fully breathable – keeping users dry and comfortable in the widest range of temperatures and conditions. The payoff is users are able to maintain a steady state of temperature and humidity, allowing them to spend more time performing at their best and less time fussing with gear,” says Arhnold.

We currently utilize eVent in our men's Nomad Jacket and Bib Pant; and our women's Meadow JacketScarlett Bib.
